Young Persons Awards

Queens Guide . Duke of Edinburgh . Commonwealth . Community Safety

Queen’s Guide Award

This is the highest award in Guiding and allows you to develop skills and have exciting new experiences, whilst contributing to Guiding and your community. It’s equivalent to the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award (and most of the clauses can count for both awards!) and as well as being great fun, is a fantastic thing to have on a UCAS form or job application!
It is open to members aged 16 to 25 and takes a maximum of three years to complete.

This is a popular award in the County and you will be supported by a mentor and the Queen’s Guide Award Adviser. There are also virtual catch-ups with other Queen’s Guide Award candidates every two months so that you can share your progress, keep each other motivated and make some new friends along the way.
To read more information on the award check out the GGUK website here.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

DofE county information

An internationally recognised award which provides opportunities to try new things, make a difference and have exciting adventures, the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award is open to members aged 13 to 25. There are three levels:
– Bronze (Year 9 or above)
– Silver (Year 10 or above)
– Gold (Age 16+)

This is a prestigious award which is well-recognised by employers, colleges and universities around the world. It is also fantastic fun and provides an amazing sense of accomplishment. Recent participants from our County have hiked from the east to west coast of the Isle of Wight, volunteered at Poacher, learnt to speak BSL, explored Brownsea Island and walked puma cubs whilst volunteering at an animal sanctuary in Argentina!
You will be supported by the DofE Award Adviser. There are also virtual catch-ups with other DofE candidates every two months so that you can share your progress, keep each other motivated and make some new friends along the way, as well as doing some training and planning for your expeditions.
More information can be found here.

Commonwealth Award

This award is open to Guiding members in over 50 countries, it is a fantastic way to find out about the Commonwealth and about Guiding around the world. The award is open to members aged 13 to 25 and has four main sections:
– Finding out about the history of Guiding
– Finding out about the Commonwealth, focussing in particular on one country of your choice

– Carrying out two mini projects on topics of your choice, from: health, environment, culture, fitness, public speaking, creative writing and citizenship.

You are welcome to complete this award independently or, in our County, we provide the opportunity to complete it with others by attending two residential events:
– Sleepover 1 (Spring) – Find out about the Commonwealth and the history of Guiding, do a mini project of your choice, play Commonwealth bingo, try some international crafts, games and activities.
– Sleepover 2 (Autumn) – Do a second mini project of your choice, share an activity from your chosen country, enjoy a quiz night, try some international foods and then have your award presented by the County Commissioner.
– Plus 20 hours of community action between the two events.

Our two County Residential events for 2023 are being held on the 13-14 April and 14-15 September. For more information and to book onto the events email our County Youth Awards Adviser on cyaa@gglincssouth.org.
